Parmelee Beagles

One week old...

Our little pack is now one week old! For them it was an uneventful week, eating, sleeping and growing. Their Momma got very tender in her breasts on Wednesday so we applied cabbage pultices for the day and she recovered quickly. Shelby is doing great with the pups! She makes us proud. All the pups hit over 100% over birth weight gain as of this morning which we are very happy with. We are starting to talk to potential families now, mostly to get a feel for what they are looking for so that when we start seeing personalities we can start matching up families to puppies.

Our next big excitement will be late next weekend when the eyes start openiing. The chocolate beagles tend to have very blue eyes when they first open. As they get older the eyes fade a bit to a goldish color with a little hazel. A few days after the eyes open their little ears will start opening and then things get really fun! Both Tucker and Talbot hit the 1 pound mark this morning, Talbot being just a touch bigger right now. Those two boys were our biggest at birth at 8 ounces. Nash is still our smallest at one week old, he’s up to almost 13 ounces this morning and Bugatti and Hudson are tied in the middle. Today is my last day of weighing everyone twice a day to keep an eye on growth. We’ll go to once a week weighings starting tomorrow unless someone looks like they are having issues. We’ve added a door to the PuppyDen to help keep the pups safely in there for now. In close to 2 weeks, we’ll expand them to a slightly larger PuppyPen area as they start to get their footing and start introducing them to toys.

Someone was asking me if any of the pups was lighter than the others. Nash has a slightly lighter dark brown then the other four, the rest are a very dark chocolate shade for the brown. Tan is starting to come in on their faces and their faces are getting more and more puppy looking. We’ll start to be able to guess at face markings by next weekend.

The litter is now registered with the AKC, litter number HP612044. And we have the puppies go-home toys on the way too. I just like to get that all out of the way.
